On Being Vulnerable On Social Media
Thanks to those who share personal stories we can draw strength from.
Hi there,
It has been a minute. A lot has been happening. But, I thank God it has been going great so far (a story for another day).
Recently, a friend of mine sent me a Twitter link about someone we both know. He tweeted about his journey being HIV+ for five years and how he has been undetectable for four years.
When I read this, my anxiety soared. I was concerned about him.
Coming on social media to talk about your HIV status in a country like mine is, for the lack of a better word, dangerous.
It is a brave thing to put yourself out there and tell the entire world: “this is me. This is who I am, and these are my battles.”
It is incredible how many lives you will impact, and I envy that. I even respect you more when you deal with the vitriol that might come after, but even that does not stop you. As far as I am concerned you’re nothing short of amazing.
I want to do that someday — under a pen name or something — I want to inspire and encourage people with my stories.
But not now, and that is okay.
To everyone that shares their struggles and battles and how they overcome them, I say thank you.
You are heroes.
